Detective Sherdil 2025 Movie Review

If predictable tropes were evidence, Detective Sherdil would crack its case before the opening credits roll. Directed by Ravi Chhabriya, this murder mystery aspires to blend sharp whodunit thrills with dark comedy but stumbles into a mire of obvious twists and tired clichés, leaving little to uncover.

Diljit Dosanjh stars as Sherdil, a quick-witted detective whose theatrical flair—complete with mouth organ riffs and relentless charm—overshadows his sleuthing. His cheeky demeanor persists even amid grim circumstances, a trait that could have sparkled with sharper humor. Yet, despite its dark comedy billing, the film fails to elicit even a smirk.

The story kicks off with the murder of Pankaj Bhatti, whose will outrageously bequeaths his wealth to his pets and a single loyal employee. His family—each member a glaring suspect—reacts with predictable indignation. Sumeet Vyas plays Angad, the sneering son, while Ratna Pathak Shah’s Rajeshwari, a near-carbon copy of her iconic Maya Sarabhai, hams it up as the icy matriarch. Banita Sandhu’s Shanti, the deaf-mute daughter, offers a quiet contrast, her favoritism by her father telegraphed from the start.

The problem lies not just in the suspects’ cartoonish portrayals but in their lack of depth, draining any sense of intrigue. Sherdil himself seems disengaged, his sly grins and quips suggesting he finds the case as simplistic as the audience does. The film shifts from “whodunit” to “howdunit,” a pivot so overtly explained it feels patronizing.

Chhabriya keeps the pace brisk, ensuring the film doesn’t linger too long. But no amount of speed can salvage a flat mystery, forced gags, or characters that feel like archetypes in costume. The talented ensemble, including Dosanjh, delivers oddly subdued performances, likely hindered by a lackluster script.
