Mandala Murders S01 Web Series Review

Mandala Murders masterfully blends ancient mysticism with modern crime, its title evoking the symbolic ‘Mandala’—a sacred geometric pattern tied to spiritual traditions—and a string of chilling contemporary killings. Crafted by Gopi Puthran (known for Mardaani) and co-directed with Manan Rawat, this series merges mythology, crime, and psychological thriller elements into a dense, atmospheric tale. Anchored by a gripping premise—ritualistic murders linked to a secretive ancient society—it delivers a slow-burn, lore-rich narrative that intertwines past and present with haunting precision, though its ambition sometimes dulls its sharpness.

The story begins in 1950s Charandaspur, a fictional town in Uttar Pradesh, where Rukmini (Shriya Pilgaonkar) fails a mysterious ritual, setting a dark precedent. Fast-forward to 2025, suspended Delhi cop Vikram Singh (Vaibhav Raj Gupta) moves to the same town with his father, only to uncover a brutal murder tied to his troubled past. Teaming up with composed yet razor-sharp CIB officer Rea Thomas (Vaani Kapoor) and local SHO Pramod (Sharat Sonu), Vikram unravels a web of cryptic symbols, hidden motives, and mythological conspiracies that challenge their logic, faith, and resilience.

YRF Entertainment’s production is visually stunning, with Shaz Mohammed’s cinematography vividly capturing both the 1950s and 2025 settings. Foggy forests, eerie tunnels, shadowy interiors, and intricate ritualistic imagery create an immersive, foreboding atmosphere. Sanchit and Ankit Balhara’s haunting score amplifies the tension without overwhelming the narrative.

Vaani Kapoor shines in her OTT debut as Rea Thomas, delivering a poised, intense, and physically dynamic performance. Her line, “This case seems straightforward, but there’s more to it,” encapsulates the show’s enigmatic core. Vaibhav Raj Gupta sheds his Gullak persona, portraying a grief-stricken, angry Vikram with depth. Surveen Chawla excels as Ananya Bharadwaj, a politician balancing vulnerability and strength, particularly in the gripping climax. Shriya Pilgaonkar leaves a lasting impact in her brief but crucial role, while Jameel Khan injects wit and mystery as Jimmy Khan. Sharat Sonu as the loyal SHO Pramod and Manu Rishi as Vikram’s father deliver authentic, compelling performances.
